Sample ImageIt is going to be a greater challenge for education students.

Dr. Fe C. delos Reyes, schools division superintendent Compostela Valley was one of the 28 participants of the country to Australia the Practicum for Pre-Service Teacher Education Unit on October 28 to November 11, 2006.

"We saw for ourselves how pre-service education was being done in the schools of Australia, specifically the city of Adelaide," said delos Reyes who is the chairperson of the superintendents' group for pre-service education in Region XI in an interview.

The study tour was a part of the Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM) Project for the incoming teachers to be really prepared for teaching.

As observed, she said there are teachers who are now in the public schools but are found still needing some more exposure to classroom strategies even when they are already employed.

In Australia she said they really value their learning that they share with their student teacher. "Meaning they feel that without mentor, the student teacher is not allowed to deal with children." she stressed.

She also observed that they render best services and best practices in schools including strong reading recovery program.

She Said in Australia they have long started practicum even in the first year university education. "But in our universities, we only started the practicum of our education students at the graduating year level already," she said.

But there are now a move through Circular Memorandum Order No. 30 Series of 2005 requiring second year level students to go on field studies.

"We are starting our program that would expose our education students to field studies in elementary and secondary schools in the province," she said. This would mean more exposure to classroom instruction giving them a better preparation that just one year.

She hoped BEAM - PSE would really make a change and difference in the competence of the teachers.

Project “LILLIAN

Learning and Instructions under the Labor of Love to Instill education despite Adversity, Needful of care.

After the Masara Mountain Landslide Tragedy, life must go on, especially for the schoolchildren who are hungry of knowledge and information.

Thus, Project Lillian (Learning and Instructions under the Labor of Love . . . . . . . . . . ) which primarily aims to foster teaching-learning despite the absence of regular classrooms, where the evacuees are temporarily occupying.

Thirteen learning centers were simultaneously built out through bayanihan among the school administrators and teachers coming from the 13 districts of the Schools Division of Compostela Valley Province. These would serve as makeshift centers for the teachers to hold classes.

Parents expressed gratitude for the project and showed feelings of relief that their children could continue attending their classes.

Truly, life is more meaningful, if it’s lovingly shared to others where Project LILLIAN is anchored, the project which the ASDS//SDS-OIC, DR. LILLIAN C. CALICDAN spearheaded.
